Atlanta Drivers Some of the Most Aggressive in the Nation

Sharing is caring!

Atlanta is a tough city for drivers as any regular commuter in and around the city will attest! The area can also be confusing and challenging for visitors who need to wind their way through the downtown freeways as well as neighboring suburbs, and the aggressive nature of Atlanta drivers may not help their situation any, as recently the Atlanta metro area was ranked as one of the most dangerous cities for drivers in the country.

This “honor” for the city is not new, as Atlanta has ranked as the number one most dangerous city for drivers in times past. The site Nerdwallet, a personal finance company that assists individuals with financial and buying decisions, says that the city is considered dangerous for drivers due to its high number of vehicle collisions and vehicle-related crimes. GasBuddy, a real-time fuel pricing online site, released their own report recently, backing Nerdwallet’s claim.

GasBuddy, however, goes beyond vehicle accident and crime reports, noting the aggressiveness of drivers in various cities. Their smartphone app allows real-time input from drivers in various cities, noting such driving habits and “aggressive events” as speeding, hard braking, and fast accelerating. GasBuddy also collated information from the U.S. Census Bureau for the months of November 2018 through February 2019 for their findings, examining some 30 metro areas according to their population and the frequency of noted driving events.

According to GasBuddy, Atlanta is now fourth when it comes to aggressive drivers in the area. Leading the pack are Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Sacramento, respectively. GasBuddy also notes that Atlanta drivers are some 20% more aggressive than average American drivers and that Friday saw the most aggressive incidents on the road. Surprisingly, the day of the week with the least number of aggressive and dangerous incidents was, not Sunday, but Wednesday!

More Concerns For Atlanta Drivers

Danger to drivers is not the only concern for Atlanta residents when it comes to being on the road. The city is one of the most expensive places for a commute, and the lifetime cost of commuting in and around the city is often considered the highest in the country. Some of this has to do with the frequent storms in the area and the rain can cause serious issues, including water damage from flooding.

Despite the challenges in getting around the city, the Atlanta area still enjoys healthy population growth. A report released in September 2018 noted that the city added some 75,000 residents in that past year, increasing its population by 1.7%. The report also stated that the 10-county Atlanta region boasted a population of over 4.5 million residents, which outnumbers 25 states in the country!

Cherokee County and Henry County both saw the most growth during that time, growing at 19% and 15% respectively. Also, while the city of Atlanta itself saw a population decline between the years 1970 and 2000, the area has seen booming growth in recent years, no doubt due to the rise in affordable, multi-family housing in the city.

There is also much do in Atlanta, as the city is home to the Coca-Cola museum, the Georgia Aquarium, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. If you can get around the aggressive drivers on the road, you’re sure to find something you’ll love in the city for you and the entire family!
